Bandari begin title chase

Bandari will be keen to issue a statement of intent when they begin their SportsPesa Premier League title hunt on Thursday away to Nairobi City Stars at Nyayo Stadium.Still flush with victory from their DStv SuperSport Cup triumph over Kenyan champs Gor Mahia two weeks ago Bandari coach Twahir Muhiddin is confident that his charges will deliver another winning performance.The coast-based side, considered genuine title contenders, have been camping in Nairobi since they jetted back to Kenya’s capital city on Monday from their Confederation Cup preliminary round loss to DR Congo’s St. Eloi Lupopo in Lubumbashi on Sunday and are certain to parade a number of their top pre-season signings.
They include former Gor Mahia and City Stars striker Dan Sserunkuma, former Sofapaka captain and defender Felly Mulumba, and former AFC Leopards duo of Edwin Wafula and Bernard Mang’oli.Muhiddin said: “This first game of the league is usually a very important game, but it is also very tricky. We are lucky to have played a number of competitive games since the year begun and I have a better picture of my players and each of their unique capabilities.
“You know this year we are aiming for the ultimate prize so we have to start strongly. I hope that the boys will put last weekend’s result behind them and win this match, he said.City Stars, who fought for the better part of last season to avoid the big chop will be eager to record a strong start under John “Bobby” Ogallo, how is beginning a new stint at the Kawangware-based side, his second in recent years.
They Nairobi side have acquired a number of new player including former Mathare United midfielder Peter Wainaina, former Gor Mahia and Sofapaka forward Ezekiel Odera, Davies Ikocheli (formerly of Ushuru) as well as Maurice Odhiambo (Nakuru All Stars). Bandari won last year’s fixtures 1-0 and 2-1 and will feel confident of maintaining their dominance of the Nairobi city side.
